Token Import and Custom Token Addition in Wallets

Most blockchain wallets do not automatically display every token an address holds. Instead, users must manually add tokens by providing contract addresses. This research overview examines how custom token addition works on the TRON network.

Why Tokens Must Be Added Manually

Wallets cannot pre-populate a list of all possible tokens — the number of deployed contracts is enormous and constantly growing. Instead, wallets typically ship with a curated list of major tokens and allow users to add others by contract address.

On TRON, TRC20 tokens are smart contracts deployed at specific addresses. The wallet queries the contract for token metadata (name, symbol, decimals) and then monitors the address’s balance for that token.

The Token Addition Process (TRON Research)

  1. Obtain the TRC20 contract address from a verified source (TronScan, project website)
  2. In the wallet application, navigate to “Add Token” or “Custom Token”
  3. Enter the contract address — the wallet auto-fetches name, symbol, and decimal places
  4. Confirm addition — the token balance now displays in the wallet interface

Security Research Notes

Token impersonation is a documented attack vector. Malicious tokens are deployed with names and symbols that mimic legitimate tokens (e.g., “USDT” with a different contract address). Wallets display whatever name the contract returns — there is no validation of legitimacy at the wallet level.

Researchers studying this area observe how visual similarity between legitimate and malicious tokens creates risk for users who rely on name/symbol rather than contract address verification.
