The Concept of Freezing TRX

On the TRON network, users can freeze (stake) TRX to acquire network resources — specifically Bandwidth and Energy — and to gain Voting Power for participating in SR elections. Freezing TRX temporarily locks it from being transferred, in exchange for these network privileges.

Understanding the freeze mechanism is essential for researchers studying TRON’s resource allocation model and its governance participation incentives.

TRON 2.0: Stake 2.0 Model

TRON introduced an updated staking model (Stake 2.0) that separates resource acquisition and voting into distinct operations:

  • Freeze (Stake): Lock TRX to receive either Bandwidth or Energy, plus TP (TRON Power for voting)
  • Delegate: Transfer bandwidth or energy to another address without transferring TRX
  • Unfreeze: Initiate the process to retrieve staked TRX (subject to a 14-day lockup period after request)
  • Withdraw: After the lockup expires, retrieve the unstaked TRX to the available balance

Bandwidth from Frozen TRX

Freezing TRX for Bandwidth provides a resource used for most standard TRC20 token transfers and basic transactions. Each address receives a free daily allowance of Bandwidth (approximately 600 units), but high-frequency transactions or large transfers may require additional Bandwidth obtained through freezing.

Energy from Frozen TRX

Freezing TRX for Energy provides the resource consumed by smart contract execution. Since TRC20 token interactions trigger smart contract calls, Energy is consumed with each transfer. Without sufficient Energy, users pay a TRX fee to “rent” Energy from the network at current market rates.

Voting Power

All staked TRX generates an equal amount of TRON Power (TP), which is the unit of Voting Power used in SR elections. Users can allocate their TP votes among SR candidates to influence block producer selection — and in return, may receive voter reward distributions from SRs who share their block rewards.

Research Significance

The freeze mechanism illustrates how TRON aligns economic incentives with network security and governance participation. Researchers study this model to understand how staking-based resource allocation compares to fee-based models in other blockchain networks.
