Understanding HD Wallets and Derivation Paths
⚠️ Educational content only. Not financial advice. No real transactions involved.
Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallets, defined by BIP32 and extended by BIP44, represent a fundamental advancement in wallet architecture. They allow a single seed to generate a theoretically unlimited number of key pairs in a structured, reproducible hierarchy.
The BIP32 Tree Structure
HD wallets organize keys in a tree. The root is derived from the seed phrase. From this root, child keys are derived deterministically using a process called key derivation. Each child can itself be a parent of further children, creating a branching hierarchy.
Key derivation uses HMAC-SHA512: the parent key and a 32-bit index number are combined to produce a child key. Hardened derivation (indicated by ‘ in path notation) prevents child key compromise from exposing the parent key — an important security distinction.
BIP44 Derivation Paths
BIP44 standardizes the path structure across different blockchains: m / purpose' / coin_type' / account' / change / address_index
- purpose: Always 44′ for BIP44 wallets
- coin_type: 195′ for TRON, 60′ for Ethereum, 0′ for Bitcoin
- account: Separates organizational accounts (0′, 1′, etc.)
- change: 0 for external (receiving) addresses, 1 for internal (change) addresses
- address_index: Sequential address counter (0, 1, 2…)
TRON HD Wallet Research
TRON wallets following BIP44 use coin type 195. The first receiving address is derived at path m/44'/195'/0'/0/0. Researchers can verify this by importing the same seed phrase into different TRON wallet applications and confirming identical addresses are generated — demonstrating the deterministic property of HD wallets.
