How TRON Addresses Are Derived: Technical Research

Understanding how TRON addresses are derived from cryptographic keys is fundamental to blockchain research. TRON uses the same elliptic curve cryptography as Ethereum (secp256k1) but applies its own address encoding scheme.

The Derivation Process

TRON address derivation follows these steps:

  1. Private Key Generation: A 256-bit random number is generated as the private key
  2. Public Key Derivation: The Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) on secp256k1 produces a 512-bit (64-byte) public key from the private key
  3. Keccak-256 Hash: The public key is hashed using Keccak-256, producing a 32-byte hash
  4. Address Extraction: The last 20 bytes of the Keccak-256 hash form the raw address
  5. TRON Prefix: The prefix byte 0x41 is prepended to the 20-byte address
  6. Base58Check Encoding: The 21-byte result is encoded using Base58Check (same algorithm as Bitcoin), producing the familiar T-prefixed address

Why TRON Addresses Start With T

The 0x41 prefix byte, when encoded through Base58Check, always produces addresses beginning with the letter T. This is a deterministic result of the encoding scheme, not a cosmetic choice — it allows users to visually distinguish TRON addresses from Ethereum addresses (which begin with 0x) and Bitcoin addresses (which begin with 1 or 3 or bc1).

HD Wallet Derivation on TRON

Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallets use the BIP32/BIP44 standard. TRON’s coin type in BIP44 is 195, meaning the standard derivation path is m/44'/195'/0'/0/0. This allows a single seed phrase to generate unlimited addresses deterministically.
